Some traditions also expand it as:
सः अस्मि / Aham Sa — which is essentially the same in meaning.

So – “That” (the universal, divine consciousness)

Ham – “I am” (the individual self)

“I am That.”

“I am one with the universe / ultimate reality.”

This mantra is a direct declaration of non-duality (Advaita), expressing that the individual self and the universal consciousness are not separate.

So – “That”

  • Refers to the universal consciousness, the ultimate reality, or Brahman.

  • Symbolizes the absolute, infinite, and all-pervading essence behind all creation.

  • Represents truth, light, and the eternal.

Ham – “I am”

  • Refers to the individual self — your consciousness, mind, or soul.

  • It is the recognition of your own existence as a spark of the universal reality.

 

Essence

“I am not separate from the universal consciousness.
I am That eternal, infinite reality.”

  • This mantra is less about ritual and more about meditative awareness.

  • It helps dissolve the illusion of separation, ego, and duality.

  • Regular practice cultivates inner peace, presence, and self-realization.

Now for practice

  • Sit comfortably with a straight spine.

  • Close your eyes and breathe slowly.

  • Feel your mind settling into stillness.

  • Chant “So” silently or aloud as you inhale.

  • Chant “Ham” silently or aloud as you exhale.

This is often called natural breath meditation, because the mantra synchronizes with your breathing.

Optional visualization:

  • Imagine inhaling universal energy (“So”) and exhaling your personal self or ego (“Ham”), merging the two.

  • With each repetition, feel yourself dissolving into the oneness of existence.

Start with 5–10 repetition minutes daily, and gradually increase Start with 108 or more repetitions, depending on your practice time.

  • Calms the mind: Aligns your breath with awareness.

  • Self-realisation: Deepens understanding of your true self.

  • Reduces egoic tension: Dissolves the sense of separation.

  • Spiritual alignment: Helps connect daily consciousness with universal consciousness.

“So’ham” is a beautiful meditative lens:

  • “So” – draws you toward the infinite, universal reality.

  • “Ham” – grounds you in your own awareness.

  • Together, it’s a constant reminder of your unity with all that exists.
