A moving prayer of our spine

We come onto hands and knees, a four-legged embodiment once again, instinctive, sensing, alive. Palms root beneath shoulders, knees under hips, the earth holding us up from our four corners. Here, no performance only rhythm.

Cow pose bitilāsana बितिलासन (expansive — breathe In)

We inhale, and our body becomes a bowl of sky. The belly softens and descends, not in defeat, but as trust. Our heart reaches forward and through, unguarded, reaching out in all directions. Collarbones widen like wings remembering when we last took flight. The shoulder blades draw gently together, not pinched, but inviting space. The tailbone lifts, a quiet signal rising from our base of beingness. And our gaze floats upward, eyes soft, and curious.

Openness, receiving.

Cat pose mārjāryāsana मार्जार्यासन (contraction — breathe out)

We exhale, and our body becomes a wave curling inward. Our spine domes toward the sky, each vertebra lifting like beads on a mala string. We focus on the movement in the lower lumber, as the belly draws in and up, but with deep intelligence, a returning to our centre. Our tailbone tucks, root drawing down energetically into the earth beneath. Shoulder blades spread wide, the back body awakening like a hidden landscape. The chin folds toward the chest, gaze turning inward not withdrawal, but deeply listening.

Containment, integration.

The dance between

This is not two poses. It is one breath with two faces.

  • Inhale as we expand, receive, open.  Exhale as we gather, refine, return

Like the tide and shore. Do not rush the transition. Gently invite the breath to move through us and move over and within our landscape.

  • Our inhale begins in the belly, ripples through ribs, lifts the heart, reaches the crown of the head and beyond

  • Our exhale begins in our core travels up the spine,  rounds the back, softens the head

If it feels mechanical, you’re making shapes. If it feels wave-like, you’re experiencing yoga.

Chakras in motion

Cat & Cow gently moves energy through the entire major arcana chakra system, dancing through each as it goes:

  • Muladhara (मूलाधार) root cakra

Stabilized through rooting hands and knees grounding the movement.

  • Svadhisthana (स्वाधिष्ठान) sacral cakra

The pelvis tilting in Cow and tucking in Cat awakens fluidity, creativity, emotional flow.

  • Manipura (मणिपूर) solar plexus cakra

Activated strongly in Cat as the core engages building inner strength and clarity.

  • Anahata (अनाहत) heart cakra

Expanded in Cow opening emotional space, softening unneeded defences.

  • Vishuddha (विशुद्ध) throat cakra

Stimulated through neck movement.  Sound expression and release.

  • Ajna (आज्ञा) third eye cakra

Engaged as gaze shifts inward and outward.  Awareness deepens.

This sequence doesn’t force energy—it circulates it.

Meridians & energetic nadi pranic flow

In the language of meridians, cat & cow are like a gentle waving current moving with our body, like two lovers in the dance of eternity,:

  • Bladder meridian (along the spine)

Massaged through flexion and extension, supporting nervous system balance and releasing stored tension & eliminating toxins..

  • Kidney meridian

Nourished through spinal movement and breath, supporting vitality and deep reserves of energy.

  • Stomach & spleen meridians (front body)

Opened in Cow, supporting digestion, nourishment, and grounding.

  • Governing vessel (du mai)

Activated through the spine’s wave, enhancing circulation of life force and mental clarity.

  • Conception vessel (ren mai)

Engaged through the front body, balancing inner awareness and emotional regulation.

It is less about “activating” and more about unblocking what needs to remember how to move.

Beyond the obvious benefits

Physically:

  • Increases spinal flexibility and health

  • Lubricates joints and awakens the nervous system

  • Relieves back, neck, and shoulder tension

  • Supports breath capacity and coordination

Energetically & emotionally:

  • Releases held emotion stored along the spine

  • Balances activation (cow) and introspection (cat)

  • Regulates the nervous system, especially when synchronized with slow breathing

Mentally:

  • Trains you to link movement with breath

  • Develops body awareness and subtle control

  • Interrupts rigidity, physically and psychologically

How to truly take the comfortable seat of cat cow flow

Do not aim for “big” movement. Aim for honest movement, in the comfort of your own skin.

  • Let our spine glide like a dance segment by segment—not as one block, energy moving through each one in turn

  • Keep the arms active but not rigid, press the ground away gently

  • Allow the pelvis to initiate the wave

  • Let the head be the last to move, like a wave moving from the root to the crown

Feel where there is resistance. a stiff vertebra, a guarded rib, breath that doesn’t want to go fully in or out.

This is where the practice comes alive through our awareness of our landscape. Expand and contract, again and again, without losing our centre.

With breath. with water, for life
